How the real test works
The Life in the UK test has 24 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes. To pass, you need at least 18 correct — that is 75%. The test costs £50 each time, and it is the same test whether you are applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship.
Most people who fail do so because they underestimated specific chapters — particularly the history and government sections. Regular mock testing helps you find those gaps before your real appointment.
How FutureCitizen mock tests work
Each mock test on FutureCitizen:
- Contains 24 questions drawn from across all chapters of the official handbook
- Runs with a 45-minute countdown — the same as the real test
- Shows your score and correct answers the moment you finish
- Includes a short explanation for every question you got wrong
- Is randomly generated each time — no two tests are the same
When you finish, you can see exactly which questions you missed and why. If you are consistently scoring 18 or above across several different tests, you are ready for your real appointment.

When to use mock tests
Mock tests are most useful after you have done some studying. Taking them before covering the material tends to produce low scores that are hard to learn from.
- Read through the FutureCitizen study guide chapter by chapter
- Take full mock tests once you have covered all chapters
- Review what you got wrong after each test
- Repeat until you are consistently hitting 18 or above
